Protest!!!!
and stick it to the electric companies, right in their wallet. a mass blackout
could have financial impact on those bastards. and show us how dependant we are
on that little buzzing wire...
ROLL YOUR OWN BLACK OUT THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER
JUNE 21, 2001 THURS EVE, 7-10pm worldwide, all time zones
---------------------------------------------------
In protest of George W. Bush's energy policies and lack of emphasis on
efficiency, conservation and alternative fuels, there will be a voluntary
rolling blackout on the first day of summer, June 21 at 7pm - 10pm in any time
zone (this will roll it across the planet).
It's a simple protest and a symbolic act. Turn out your lights from 7pm-10pm on
June 21. Unplug whatever you can unplug in your house. Light a candle to the
sungod, kiss and tell, make love, tell ghost stories, do something instead of
watching television, have fun in the dark.
Forward this email as widely as possible, to your government representatives and
environmental contacts. Let them know we want global education, participation
and funding in conservation, efficiency and alternative fuel efforts -- and an
end to over exploitation and misuse of the earth's resources.

Labour supports email spy policy
by Wendy Brewer Friday, 18 May 2001 The government is backing EU plans to extend the state's power to snoop at private emails. Under the proposals, all email communications will have to be retained by ISPs for a seven-year period. "Only people who have something to hide should be worried," said a spokesperson at the Department of Trade and Industry. "The government will only have cause to browse emails if they have their suspicions about a user. They simply don't have the time or money to check every email sent." The proposals were revealed in a leaked EU report earlier this week. But Human Rights groups are enraged by the proposals claiming they breach a fundamental right to privacy. Having already campaigned against RIPA (the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act), which gives government the right to demand encryption codes, protestors are now infuriated these powers may be extended. "This was meant to strike a balance," said a press officer for the EC. "Governments need maximum powers to catch cyber criminals, but there will always be people who are unhappy." The European Union's Justice and Home Affairs Committee will consider the proposals on 28 May.Sunday, May 20, 2001

The Gnutella protocol does not scale; it is being changed so that it will scale. This involves making more powerful clients on fat pipes into supernodes that can handle indexing, while less powerful nodes are simply leech / storage nodes.
"Legitimate" sources will never be as cool / popular as Gnutella, becaus they always have to have one eye over thier shoulders due to ambulance chasers trying to shut them down/make a buck. Napster is being abandoned because of this lawyer/RIAA pressure; check out the numbers: Napster is loosing users because so much is being filtered.
Once the problems of the Gnutella scaling, structure and anonymity are solved, it will grow expontionally; nothing can compete with free access to EVERYTHING; no "legal" site can compete; its as simple as that. What will be interesting to see is what happens to those sites that provide www interfaces to Gnutella, and wether or not the RIAA BiaTcEs will try to shut them down.
Journalists (who are mostly computer illiterates) do not have the necessary capacity to imagine what it would be like to have free access to everything in a way that is totally unstopabble and unrestricted. This is why they always say that it wont work, or that there is some fix over the horizon that will solve it all. They have no direct experience with Warez or Cracking, and so dont understand that there is NOTHING anyone can do to stop the free flow of files on a network.
These dumbasses cant even find out this stuff from Google. Filesharing is here to stay; no matter how hard they try, the RIAA and thier pig bedfellows will always fail. HMG today said that it will back email snooping legislation being out forward by the EEC. These nimrods dont even understand that the next version of Sendmail (the program that is responsible for 99.99% of all emailsent in the world) will have unbreakable transparently inplimented end to end encryption build in by default,so that no ones email, in transit and when it sits on an ISPs server will be readable by the ISP, or anyone else.
We are going to have our freedom; privacy online will be universal, the free exchange of files will be commonplace. What will have to change is how artists and labels are compensated. This will probably mean users taking personal responsibility for compensating the artists and labels that they enjoy by buying tshirts and maybe physical sound carriers & other stuff.
This is the new reality, and its good. Its a shock, it takes getting used to, but once you sit and THINK about it, it makes sense, and takes your breath away with its simplicity.
And as for this "virus" bullshit, well this just proves that the article was written by a total LamEr; these are the same l00sers that use outlook express and click on "nudehornyhousewife.jpg" the instant that it arrives in their inbox. These virus red herrings are boring at best, and will not do anything but discredit the lamers that write this sort of FUD/trash talk.

"Loft Story," based on the exploits of a group of twentysomethings in a sealed compound jammed with television cameras, has attracted huge ratings since its launch a few weeks ago.
In an emergency sitting called after fierce criticism of the programme led by French intelligentsia and clergy, the Paris-based CSA authority ruled that the constant TV scrutiny of the contestants harmed their human rights.
"(The authority) requires daily breaks of significant and reasonable duration in which no audio or visual recording or broadcasting shall take place," it said in a statement.
"Regardless of the aim of the programme or the fact that the contestants have given their consent, it is imperative from the point of human dignity that there are places and times in which they are not submitted to public observation," it added.
When was the last time you heard the word intelligentsia used to describe a living person?!! And ummm, the human rights of the contestants demands that they have the right to be filmed in ANY WAY THAT THEY CONSENT TO BE FILMED. DUH!

Unbelievable: HMG adopts PGP!
"the UKGovernment is to implement encryption technology to enable secure e-mail communication between its departments, a move that could save taxpayer's money and increase efficiency. PGP Security last week said it was to supply government departments with a 128-bit version of its PGP for HMG encryption product. It said the product would provide encryption technology at the approved baseline/ restricted level which would enable government bodies and commercial partners to communicate securely. "Any government information that is sensitive is not sent electronically, instead it is saved on a disc and physically taken to the other department - at the taxpayer's expense," said Mark Tucker, sales manager for PGP. The company said version 6.0 of PGP for HMG will be fully inter-operable with its commercial counterpart. "The sheer volume of restricted information that governments need to transfer electronically means they need a solution they can trust," said John Doody, head of customer services at the government's National Technical Information Security Authority.Wednesday, May 02, 2001

Mobile Photography
High-quality telephones are only half the story. The DoCoMo store also featured a range of more specialized mobile Internet appliances. The two examples shown here are intended for mobile photography. Camessepetit and Eggy both let users snap photos, which they can then decorate with cartoonish overlays and transmit to others who are using similar devices or regular i-mode telephones.
Camessepetit (left) and Eggy (right) mobile photography products from DoCoMo
Camessepetit is clearly intended for children, and I applaud DoCoMo for shipping simplified mobile products for this demanding user population.
Eggy also does digital movies but seems more nerdy. How can I apply the term "nerdy" to a product named "Eggy"? Well, anything with buttons labeled mode, menu, and shift definitely has nerdy tendencies, regardless of what it's called. Maybe DoCoMo should have applied a little more usability to Eggy before it was released.
Well well wellie well well!! How long do you think that we will have to wait for these incredibly beautiful useful and fun phonez to reach our shores? probably never is the answer, and that my friends, SUCKS.
The report of the Demise of The Buzzer was premature; we check the buzzer every day, and the day that we thought it had gone west, it actually became audible extremely late in the day. This may have been to the coronal mass ejections / sunsopots that have been blasting the earth this month.
Normally, we can start to hear The Buzzer late in the afternoon, but that day, it started to become barely audible at around 7ish, which is *really* late. As soon as we heard the Buzzer in its normal place, we n00ked the post, which accounts for the blotting out...

Laziness is one of themost powerful energies in the universe.
Closely related to entropy, laziness is like heroin/morphine/percocet addiction. Its ssooooooooooo good, so enveloping, warm comfortable and reassuring, that once you have to give it up, its like being one of the living dead.
Like chemical drug addiction, the Rich can afford to feed their laziness habbit. They can swan around "stoned" all day, drinking coffe, excersising, watching Dragonball Z, screwing, what-ever. And as it is with chemical addiction (coke), the "old money" Rich mind set can live with laziness, and are not destryoed by it; just look at all the pop stars / lottery winners who get rich quick, stop working, and then die because they get "bored".
Yes dear friends, if you can, choose laziness, "Ne travaillez jamais" they said in '68 (aparently).
Words to live by....

The draconian-sounding Italian law about people running websites
needing to join the Italian equivalent of the NUJ, have a "responsible
editor" etc. became law on the 5th or April.
I've been following rants about it but don't think I understand what
it really amounts to.
Broadly speaking, it seems to be in line with other Italian
legislation in that it can't possibly mean what it appears to, but
if the authorities decide they don't like you they can probably use it
to put you in prison for ever.
I read a Q&A with one of the supporters of the law which read a lot
like HO stuff here about why RIPA isn't scary.
Does everyone with a website need to register?
No, of course not, that would be silly.
So who, then?
People who run online newspapers.
How do you know if you run an online newspaper?
If you make information available to the general public.
So, any web page?
No, only if you update it regularly.
etc. etc.
This is from memory. I certainly didn't come away with a clear idea of
whether my "recreational maths books" web page would be an online
newspaper if I updated it every time I bought or read a recreational
maths book.
Some of the people who are worried about the law claim that you can
theoretically get a life sentence for breaking it (because anonymous
publishing is very very illegal in Italy).
Mind you, Italy has some odd laws. It's illegal to be rude about
foreign heads of state. Note that as the Vatican is a foreign country
this would make it illegal to be rude about the Pope. Hmm.

Somebody forgot to tell Alcatel that the Track Changes feature of Microsoft Word is a dangerous thing to use when you plan to make the document available online and the publisher of said document doesn't have a clue about how to merge the changes in permanently prior to making it publicly available for all to see. With all of their commentary intact, the document was made available online, and is somewhat enlightening to those that really believe that these companies care about customers. Check out the entirety of Alcatel's classic PR move.

did you write that post in IE for OSX? Or is that not out yet??

upgrade woes? at work today a botched install on
one of their nt4 mail machines ate the exchange records
for over three hundred users. via the backup all was saved
all be it for my nerves and the lack of food in my system. unfortunate
for me i had to deal with a horrible os but it's not my choice of platforms.
also thru this trying situation ip was taken away and the raid controller
stopped functioning.....needless to say i can relate. nothing like
running a ms network except the steady drip of never ending water
torture. also here in the us...northpoint(line supplier) filed chap 11 and
cut their service......:without notice from their wonderful isp no web-no
mail et al. i had heard that 100,000 accounts were dropped point blank
and again without notice. comcast(cable) and verizon(pstn) are scrambling
to further their already controlling grasp on the communications industry in
the mid-atlantic states. sad. by money...b(u)y freedom. hey home user you
want vpn? take that cable modem at 40$ per month and up it to 90$. what
else is included in this price? nothing! just an open port for pptp. again..
...sad. can someone say "anti-trust"?

Yesterday, tried to upgrade from Mozilla 17 to Mozilla .8, and when untarred the package, the sytem got hosed. x refused to start.
Took the opportunity to n00k the installation and then upgrade to mandrake 7.2, this time without KDE (220meg) and a whole bunch of other stuff, like enlightenment. Couldnt do the upgrade the "right way"; the mandrake 7.2 installer has a broken part in it; if it detects that you dont have enough space to upgrade, it gets stuck in a loop with an error dialogue.
Have limited space on this drive (1.5gig); need an 8 gig drive to do a less restriced install..then again, its "good practice" (in both ways) to choose and install each package individually. These Linux installers are getting better and better. Next, going to give Debian another try, either progeny or the "real thing". The potato 2.2 installer failed to create a /dev/mouse and frankly, "we need to work!"

As some of you may know there is a census coming around on Sunday April 29
2001
For those who don't know, a census is where the government collates
general information about it's residents (number of people living in
your house, religion, etc)
Apparently, if there are enough people in Great Britain, who put down a
religion that isn't mentioned on the census form it becomes a fully
recognised and legal religion. It usually takes about 10,000 people to
nominate the same religion. It is for this reason that it has been
suggested
that anyone who does not have a dominant religion to put "Jedi" as their
religion.
Send this on to all your friends and tell them to put down "Jedi" on
their census form. And remember ......If you are a member of the Jedi
religion then you are by default a 'Jedi Knight'.
So If this has been your dream since you were 4 years old.... Do it cos
you love Star Wars, If not........... then just do it to annoy people.

Nuts and bolts
One of Extreme's key tenants requires programmers to release a nuts-and-bolts version of its product to the customer first and then continue to build additional features afterward. This immediately remedies the time-to-market problem, and customers wind up with a less buggy product to which features are added as the customer demands. Extreme also requires programmers to maintain a direct relationship with the customer. Rather than packing a product with thousands of features, the customer can specify exactly what they want, and the programmer can focus on perfecting a few features. Programmers must write tests for their own programs before they begin coding. These tests are used instead of an independent "quality assurance," or testing, group--a technique that will save time, according to Extreme's advocates. During the coding process, programmers also practice a technique called re-factoring. This involves constantly working to simplify the code. By keeping code clean and defining things only once, programmers reduce the number of errors that must be addressed later. For code writers themselves, one of the most striking differences is Extreme's requirement of pair programming. Once they switch to pairs, many programmers say they prefer it because the team approach can dramatically boost productivity and quality. Extreme also mandates communal ownership of all code. http://www.xprogramming.com/what_is_xp.htm
basically i my opinion gwb is a tool. a puppet if you will
and for that matter they all have been and probably always
will be. but it does matter who they are the puppets for.
and this stat:"84 have been arrested for drunk driving in
the last year" out of 535 is pretty poor #'s let face it. if
anything most people in congress and in the upper levels
of the us gov are 'insulated monks'. they just seem
worldly as they have had to put up with each others bullshit
for years. it's all a big f#ing joke man, come on. we have no
real say and will never have it again unless people decide on
their own that they are ready to release control which
will not happen. i am not advocating giving up on trying to
get things done but it's quite futile and getting more so daily.
this is the truth anyway you would choose to slice it i'm sorry
to say. yes yes we are at the top of the game(us) but at
what cost? guts?????? perhaps the ones on the sidewalks
of our bloody past and future. we are guily of genocide even
nazi germany can't claim the success we have achieved in
this dept. are we the only country to have such a past? ov
course not but it's easy to forget when your drinking a f&*ing

clinton, was he better?? of course not it's all a sham. that the
fucking truth! nike/sprite/n' sync is there any difference? cisco
will be the death of us all.......perhaps that's taking it too far.
or is it? we can crawl into our little cyber worlds of our own

Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500
employees and has the following statistics:
*29 have been accused of spousal abuse
*7 have been arrested for fraud
*19 have been accused of writing bad checks
*117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at leased 2 businesses
*3 have done time for assault
*71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
*14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
*8 have been arrested for shoplifting
*21 are currently defendants in lawsuits
*84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year
Can you guess which organization this is?
Give up yet?
It's the 535 members of the United States Congress.
The same group that crank out hundreds of new laws each year
designed to keep the rest of us in line.
Whatever.
This is doing the rounds amongst the "office drones with email circuits". What it implies is that congressmen with the above attributes are not fit to rule because they have made these "mistakes", and it further implies that only people with "clean records" should rule. I beg to differ. These people are EXACTLY the sort of people that we need to rule; people with REAL EXPERIENCE of REAL LIFE, not insulated monks who know nothing about the way that everybody lives. Its great that GWB has snorted coke, maybe he will have a more rational approach to drug regulation. "Slick Willy"; I'd rather have a man with balls in charge than some vile holier than thou abstainer; he even had the guts to apologies for the MK ULTRA atrocities. What other president had the guts to even admit that it went on, much less apologize. Life is dirty. Life has rough edges. Congressmen have to deal with all of the most vile manipulative elements in the USA, and in order to repel these evil men, they have to have direct knowledge of "evil" and all of the bad practices that the "normal" (those who are not holding high office) folk get up to. In any case all of this is moot; in the USA, people elect their representatives, and all of this stuff is known BEFORE they are elected to public office. The above list only shows that America has got it right; they elect their peers to run their government, not empty shells or false "role models" who are living double lives. Americans can take the truth. They are miles ahead of every other country on earth. But you knew that...
Now THAT looks interesting; this really is the way forward; differentiation through taking responsibility for your tools; as soon as you use software thats publicly available, which today pretty much means keyboards as well as the accursed laptops, you are instanly trapped in a sound "gamut" from which its difficult to escape. If however, you build your own tools, you are working in your own space, and it will be very much more simple to break out and really explore. It would be great to hear this machine in action; I wonder what it would sound like very loud.....
It looks like something that would be sensitive to how it was amplified, and also sensitive to how much the battery had drained. There is nothing quite as lovely as the sound of battery powered amplification / crude synthesiser that is running on an almost dead set of batteries.

battle mothra stewart
origin:
Mothra's origin is not well known. She was the guardian of an
ancient race of tiny humanoids named the Cosmos who lived
on earth(and enjoyed her cookies). The Cosmos civilization
became very advanced but the Zen of Earth Lifeforce created
Battra {Battle Mothra} to kill Mothra and wipe out the Cosmos.
Although Mothra defeated Battra, the civilization of the Cosmos
still crumbled and Mothra lay dormant for many years(all be it for
her wonderful flower arrangments). In 1993 she hatches from an egg
when Godzilla and Battra threaten Japan.
note:
Mothra's behavior patterns and communication abilities indicate
an above average level of intelligence.

actually, dav i shouldn't have been speaking for you too. sorry.
to clarify. i was referencing the kyoto agreement and our(us')
backing out of it. basically, while it's a futile effort any move in that
direction can't hurt. that was my thought process. sorry if i had

i can provide links on both sides of this debate however any limit on

The Media has shown Islam as oppressing women, making them invisible, anonymous and voiceless. It implies that women were entirely submerged into a role as wife and mother. If you believe this then it may come as a surprise to learn that the majority of converts to Islam are WOMEN.
Read This
My Dear Sister, Know that you are man's sister and half of humanity. You are a mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, grand daughter or grand mother. The Prophet said, what translated means, Women are, indeed, men's partners. [Abu Dawood]. You are a member of the great nation of Islam, the best nation ever produced for mankind. No other nation on earth has more great men, leaders and conquerors than this nation. It is the nation of guidance and the straight religion, and it leads humanity to righteousness and truth. It transforms people from worshippers of slaves to worshippers of the Lord of slaves, from life's pressures to the pleasures of the Life after, and from the injustice of other religions to the justice of Islam. Your ancestors, great women of Islam, were one of the main reasons for this great nation to take this great place among all nations. Allah, Who granted Islam to this nation, made a high place for Muslim women, and decreed that they share in the responsibilities of enjoining truth, forbidding evil and raising the flag of Islam. He said, what translated means, The believers, men and women, are loyalists of one another, they enjoin righteousness and forbid evil, they offer their prayers perfectly and give the Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will leave His Mercy on them. Surely Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. [9:71] Allah has given Muslim women what they can bare of orders and duties. He is the God Who knows His creation, Should He not know what He created? And He is the Most Kind, All-Aware (of everything). [67:14]. My dear sister, you are called upon today to truly become an active member of the Muslim nation, strive to establish victory for Allah's Word, implement the Quran and help build the generation of Iman. What Do Your Enemies Want From You? There are those who want to distract you from doing your duty. They want to distract you from meeting your noble obligation, that is, to defend the religion of Allah and raise His Word high. Those enemies use many methods: First: They distract you from what Allah created you to perform of worship, belief and Da'wah (propagating Islam). They use this worldly life as their bate: Jewelry stores, fashions that originate in non-Muslim countries, new models all the time, desires raised, hunger that can never be satisfied, pleasures and competition for them and endless ways for joy. Allah did not create us for this. Indulging in these matters is usually accompanied by wasting time and money and igniting enmity and competition between the rich and the poor. Second: They ignite enmity between you and man. To those sinners, you are a daughter that is put down, a humiliated mother, an abused wife and an oppressed sister! Men are always unjust, hypocrites, dictators, freedom- preventers and suppressers, according to them. There is a fabricated war that those evil ones are starting for no reason other than to direct you to rebel against your father, be arrogant with your brother and disobedient to your husband. They do not call for justice, mercy and unity. They call for hatred, arrogance and destruction. Third: They do not stop at their call for rebellion against parents, brothers and husbands, rather, they plot against Islam. They call upon you to rebel against the obligations of Islam and the decrees of the All-Knowing King. Islam, to them, is unjust and Islamic laws are imperfect and restrictive. They call upon you, day and night, to rebel and insist on the disobedience of this religion. They try to rid you of your religion. They try to rid you of comfort and safety under generous parenthood, happy marriage and good brotherly relations. Those devils portray piety and honor as chains on freedom. To them, Hijab does not cover the head, but also covers the mind; prayer, fasting and Zakat are a waste of time and effort; and obedience to husbands is slavery and a retum to the stone age. They distorted all facts and changed all truths, all to serve their evil goals. More study to be found here. Pokemon, like Rock & Roll, Statues, Weed, House Music, The Internet and anything else on the Morons Hitlist of Evil stuff is NOT EVIL, and should not be given the status of "An Evil Thing". It makes governments and religious leaders look stupid, and none of us have any time for it, as I am sure you will agree. This Pokemon affair has nothing to do with the misconceptions about religions that are trotted out by the "be like us" brigade.

We know e-mail is popular, but just how many e-mail addresses are there today? According to Messaging Online, the number of e-mail boxes worldwide has soared to 891 million, with 51% of those outside the U.S. Not surprisingly, Web-based e-mail platforms lead the way with a 31% share, followed by ISP-serviced e-mail boxes at 26%.
These figures suggest the average Internet user has about 2.5 e-mail accounts, and point to the immense challenge of keeping e-mail lists fresh and targetable.

GM seed patents legalizing 'bio-serfdom'
By Cathryn Atkinson
BRUNO:
It all began with a few stubborn weeds in a ditch. Percy Schmeiser, a 68-year-old Canadian farmer, was puzzled by the poor result of his annual herbicide spraying in the spring of 1997. As in previous years, he used Roundup, Monsanto's weed killer, to burn off the plants along the outskirts of his 1,400-acre farm near the hamlet of Bruno, in Saskatchewan.
Despite saturating the area with herbicide, he found rogue oilseed rape plants thriving in ditches and around telephone poles. Having crossbred his own seed for 35 years, he wondered if he had accidentally created some kind of mutant.
So he sprayed Roundup from the edge of his field inward, a full 24 metres into his own flourishing crop of oilseed rape. It should have killed everything but, to his alarm, over 60 per cent of the plants survived. Only Roundup Ready oilseed rape - genetically modified by Monsanto to create a mutually exclusive relationship between their seeds and their herbicide - can survive.
Some time later, Monsanto was tipped off by a call to its (now defunct) freephone "sneak" line that Schmeiser was, allegedly, growing Roundup Ready GM oilseed rape. Monsanto asked Robinson Investigations, retained by them throughout Canada to gather information on errant farmers, to take samples from the Schmeiser farm.
Schmeiser's crop possessed Monsanto's gene, and Robinson's also visited the local mill, which chemically cleaned Schmeiser's seeds for planting, to retrieve a sample. Again, the gene was found.
Although Schmeiser says he had never bought seed from Monsanto or signed a contract, the corporation sued him for cultivating their gene, demanding all profits from the crop and unspecified punitive damages. Schmeiser argued that any number of potential contaminants could have infiltrated his seed - such as blow-offs from passing trucks laden with Roundup Ready oilseed rape, insects, wind or cross-germination, - and that further contamination could have occurred when he kept back seed to plant.
Last August, the two parties met to resolve the dispute. They failed, so Monsanto's case now goes to the supreme court of Canada in June.
Meanwhile, a furious Schmeiser has launched a suit against them, for allegedly contaminating his seed stock, for defamation and trespass, and the theft of seeds and plants. He is asking for punitive damages of C$10m (US$6.7m).
Schmeiser is one of more than 1,000 Canadian farmers investigated by Monsanto in the past three years for allegedly growing its patented GM crops and breaking the conditions of the company's technology use agreement (TUA). This gives the farmers the right, for a price of US$10 an acre, to grow GM crops, and allows Monsanto unlimited access to their fields, seed stores and crops for up to three years. Farmers must also agree to destroy any leftover seed each year in order to protect Monsanto's patent. If they wish to buy the seed the following year, they must sign the TUA and again pay the fee.
Monsanto say that 400,000 North American farmers have signed the TUA (20,000 in Canada) and over 17 million acres in Canada and 62 million in the US were covered by Monsanto's GM seed by 1999.
Monsanto Canada's Adele Pelland says 65 per cent of the oilseed rape grown in Canada in 1999 was Roundup Ready, and stresses that farmers encourage Monsanto to prosecute under the TUA, adding that they "all want a level playing field".
Schmeiser's case is gaining worldwide attention, but it is, perhaps, most closely watched by those farmers who fear Monsanto's legal wrath for violations of the TUA.
A new term, "bio-serfdom", has entered the Canadian prairie lexicon.
Edward Zielinski traded wheat seed for canola seed with another farmer in 1997. Unknown to him, the canola he planted on his farm in Mikado, Saskatchewan was contaminated with Roundup Ready seed. Monsanto set his fine at C$115 (US$77.3) an acre or C$28,750 (US$19,320). He has no intention of paying, arguing that farmers have traded seed for centuries.
And 640 kilometres east, in Arden, Manitoba, Ed Sulz is facing ruin. As a strong supporter of GM crops, he very much wanted to test Roundup Ready oilseed rape. In 1996, he was one of the first farmers in western Canada to try. The seed dealer asked him to sign the TUA. Having left his cheque book at home, Sulz left with the seed, but without the document. "I just initialled it (the TUA) and said I'd get the cheque to him," he says. Once the dealer received the cheque, the TUA was faxed to Sulz, but since the terms and conditions were on the back of the page, he never received a copy outlining its vital stipulations.
When, the following spring, Sulz had enough seed left over to plant a further 75 acres, he did so in ignorance of the conditions of his contract. Monsanto's crop cops were on to him by July, faxing a letter outlining the transgression and demanding US$226,900 in fines. The company took Sulz to court in December 1998, but the judge called their fine "outrageous" and rejected the initialled fax as a legal document.-Dawn/The Guardian News Service.

"___________"- this is getting
out of control. i give up.
one should be careful not to make assumptions on anothers motivations and/or methodologies. No assumptions were being made; the tone of what was said was clearly sniping and ridiculing. By all means, say what you like, but be prepared to be flamed if you say something; thats life online. is not what i would believe important also? yes of course, say what you like, and if someone doesn't like it, thats tough fucking shit. THIS is what freedom is really like, crikey, haven't you ever read USENET? And as for "this is exactly what we want" there are PLENTY of places for everybody to vent ther pet peeves and practice attack posting, mostly USENET. It would be nice, as an idea, that there could be a safe haven for people with something in common to be able to post and share information without having to be ridiculed, or even THINK that they might be ridiculed if they post something on a subject that someone might think is basically an impossibility. It is RIDICULE that creates an atmosphere that can be detrimental to free speech and create an atmosphere or fear and hesitation
I hope youre understanding what I am saying, and that its clear. This place doesn't belong to Irdial-Discs, and I will NEVER edit your posts, but BE PREPARED TO DEFEND YOURSELF when you post something, because someone, not always me (hopefully never me, jeez Im busy!) will flame you. And for the record: Mr Akihiro Shimizu said: It is stupid to discuss whether Nessie exists or not. The reason is because Nessie surely exists.... I agree with this, and I don't give a flying fuck about what the biologists, paleontologists, fishermen, skeptics and anyone else says. Just because they haven't found it DOESN'T MEAN ITS NOT THERE, no one is injured by looking for / having interest in this "monster", and in fact there is some very good evidence that there is SOMETHING BIG with fins in that water. And don't forget the OGOPOGO, another monster, in another lake thousands of miles from Scotland.

one should be careful not to make assumptions
on anothers motivations and/or methodologies. this
can be detrimental to free speech and create an atmosphere
or fear and hesitation in this area. in hindsight and looking back
over these posts it is clear that nothing that was stated was in
anyway an attack on anothers beliefs nor a straw man argument.
on both sides there were statements of belief and philosophical
approach.
this discussion is now begining to touch on many important issues
involving social structure and individuality amongst a group. if i were
to have made a statement that all were in agreement with i wonder
if the result would have been the same. "This is exactly what we
want, (maybe)" -why maybe? this is VERY VERY important. is not
what i would believe important also? where is the line set?
I wrote a three paragraph post, but blogger ate it, and i havent got time today to re type it. I will however, point you to here:
http://www.primenet.com/~lippard/stupid-skeptic-tricks.txt
so that you can be armed in two ways; 1, so that if you want to argue against something, you dont accidentally fall into using the traps, tactics and methodologies of evil people, and 2, if someone tries to argue with you about a subject and uses one of the tactics listed in the above file, you will be prepared.
my aim would never be to take apart
anothers perceptions of the world in which we
live. remember edward teller?
the individuals right to his or her own beliefs is
most important to me however it is also essential
that all opinions are heard in a healthy debate. which,
i am assuming this is.
should i not bother to take this any further? is it an issue
of tone?
i see your point of the why's of this situation though. that can lead
to facism in the long run. i stand by(for myself at least) my
previous arguments. this is what i believe. it is not intended
for all to employ.

i will do my homework and do my

This is exactly what we want, (maybe) not straw man arguments. we leave that behavior to scicop and those wreckers of civilization. In any case, its not our responsibility to prove or disprove anything. If someone is convinced that there is a Pleiosuar in Loch Ness, then thats OK, it harms no one, and i am very suspicious of those types who take time to take apart other people understanding of the world.
as a matter of fact i have investigated
this topic a bit while in college and quickly,

The most contagious animal disease known. It affects cloven hoofed animals including cattle, sheep, goats and pigs causing

As for the Foot & Mouth outbreak, I would bet money that Americans are soon to get a dose of it. There have been no cases of F&M in the USA since 1929, but its in South America now, and Saudi Arabia.
Its spreading like the Andromeda Strain. This and the worst day at the markets for 13 years. Crap.

Postulate 1: xxxxxxxx is xxxxxx.
Postulate 2: xxxxxxxx is xxxxxxxxxx.
postulate 3: xxxxxxxxxxxx is not equal to xxxxxxxxxxxxx
As everybody knows: xxxxxxxxx = xxxxxxxx / xxxxxxxxxx
Since: xxxxxxxx= xxxxxx,
then xxxxxxxxxx = xxxxxxxxxx * xxxxxxx^2,
and xxxxxxxxx = xxxxxxxxxx,
then xxxxxxxxxx = xxxxxxxxx^ / xxxxxxxx^2.
Solving for Money, we get: xxxxxxxxx = xxxxxxxxxx / xxxxxxxxxx.
Thus, as morality approaches zero, money approaches infinity.

Postulate 2: Time is Money.
As every engineer knows: Power = Work / Time
Since: Knowledge = Power,
then Knowledge = Work/Time,

then Knowledge = Work/Money.
Solving for Money, we get: Money = Work / Knowledge.
Thus, as Knowledge approaches zero, money approaches infinity,
regardless of the amount of work done.

The project will cost between $5,000 and $30,000, depending on how
fancy you want the final product to be. Since last week's column,
"Let's Make a Time Machine", was received so well in the new
step-by-step format, this month's column will follow the same format.
CONSTRUCTION METHOD
First, obtain about 50 pounds (110 kg) of weapons grade Plutonium at
your local supplier (see NOTE 1). A nuclear power plant is not
recommended, as large quantities of missing Plutonium tends to make
plant engineers unhappy. We suggest that you contact your local
terrorist organization, or perhaps the Junior Achievement in your
neighborhood.
Please remember that Plutonium, especially pure, refined Plutonium,
is somewhat dangerous. Wash your hands with soap and warm water after
handling the material, and don't allow your children or pets to play
in it or eat it. Any left over Plutonium dust is excellent as an
insect repellant. You may wish to keep the substance in a lead box if
you can find one in your local junk yard, but an old coffee can will
do nicely.
Fashion together a metal enclosure to house the device. Most common
varieties of sheet metal can be bent to disguise this enclosure as,
for example, a briefcase, a lunch pail, or a Buick. Do not use
tinfoil.
Arrange the Plutonium into two hemispheral shapes, separated by about
4 cm. Use rubber cement to hold the Plutonium dust together.
Now get about 100 pounds (220 kg) of trinitrotoluene (TNT). Gelignite
is much better, but messier to work with. Your helpful hardware man
will be happy to provide you with this item.
Pack the TNT around the hemisphere arrangement constructed in step 4.
If you cannot find Gelignite, fell free to use TNT packed in with
Playdo or any modeling clay. Colored clay is acceptable, but there is
no need to get fancy at this point.
Enclose the structure from step 6 into the enclosure made in step 3.
Use a strong glue such as "Crazy Glue" to bind the hemisphere
arrangement against the enclosure to prevent accidental detonation
which might result from vibration or mishandling.
To detonate the device, obtain a radio controlled (RC) servo
mechanism, as found in RC model airplanes and cars. With a modicum of
effort, a remote plunger can be made that will strike a detonator cap
to effect a small explosion. These detonatior caps can be found in
the electrical supply section of your local supermarket. We recommend
the "Blast-O-Mactic" brand because they are no deposit-no return.
Now hide the completed device from the neighbors and children. The
garage is not recommended because of high humidity and the extreme
range of temperatures experienced there. Nuclear devices have been
known to spontaneously detonate in these unstable conditions. The
hall closet or under the kitchen sink will be perfectly suitable.
Now you are the proud owner of a working thermonuclear device! It is
a great ice-breaker at parties, and in a pinch, can be used for
national defense.
THEORY OF OPERATION
The device basically works when the detonated TNT compresses the
Plutonium into a critical mass. The critical mass then produces a
nuclear chain recation similar to the domino chain reaction
(discussed in this column, "Dominos on the March", March, 1968). The
chain reaction then promptly produces a big thermonuclear reaction.
And there you have it, a 10 megaton explosion!
NEXT MONTH'S COLUMN
In next month's column, we will learn how to clone your neighbor's
wife in six easy steps. This project promises to be an exciting
weekend full of fun and profit. Common kitchen utensils will be all
you need. See you next month!
NOTES
1. Plutonium (PU), atomic number 94, is a radioactive metallic
element formed by the decay of Neptunium and is similar in chemical
structure to Uranium, Saturium, Jupiternium, and Marisum.
